What happens in an AI Agent first marketing world
29 September 2026
A lot of brand marketers I talk to are worried AI means the death of brand.
I think it’s the opposite.
I have been thinking a lot about what becomes true with marketing in an AI world. A few things are certain in my opinion:
- agents will be buying online
- we will be marketing to agents
- agents will use agent first interfaces and human first interfaces online
- agent volume will be overwhelmingly larger than user volume online
- agents will represent humans’ goals in their actions
- as such humans’ preferences, rational and irrational, will be considered in the decisions they make
This has always made me confused about how brand marketers I talk to often talk about the death of brand or at least fears of it. I think that couldn’t be further from the truth. I think two things will really impact the decisions made:
- Brand love by humans gets more valuable because machines will do what they think their human wants.
- Within that constraint, machines focus ruthlessly on actual differential value (availability as well as quality and price), presented well.
So no, agent-first marketing won’t kill brand, just like direct response didn’t. Agents will represent humans’ brand preferences.
Thinking through the 4Ps of marketing, they remain largely true principles in an agentic world. What dies is information arbitrage. When agents can see through information asymmetry instantly, the Promotion P gets reinterpreted: making sure you are in the agent’s training data set.
The remaining three don’t change:
- Placement: are you where the user loves to shop AND the agent can shop
- Pricing: are you good value for money against your competitor set? The agent will know all prices.
- Product: agents will bias towards understanding product quality based on any verifiable sources they can get access to, including your product specification.
Product remains the most important thing of all.
Monday-morning version: make your brand legible to machines. Structured facts, honest pricing, real availability. Agents are comparison engines — feed them.
So what’s old is new. Principles are timeless even if channels change. Product, Pricing, Placement, Promotion. These will matter in the new agentic world and we need to be ready.
